There’s a quote that if you “Find a job you enjoy doing, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” I was always fascinated by this idea. As long as you enjoyed your work it would somehow be magically pleasant. I’ve been working for 36 years and I can’t say I’ve ever not worked at a job, even ones I enjoyed.
I think we have to first start with the definition of work.
Work
noun
activity involving mental or physical effort done in order to achieve a purpose or result.
Well there’s my problem right there. I’ve never been able to find someone to pay me for exerting no mental or physical effort.
Maybe we go with the other definition.
Work
noun
a task or tasks to be undertaken; something a person or thing has to do
That’s a little better but I don’t like that “has to do” part. I would think it should be “wants to do”.
As a small business owner I work a lot to be able to do the thing that I enjoy which is being a health coach and helping people achieve their health & wellness goals. Unfortunately that is in the smallest percentage of what I do. The majority of the time is spent on administrative tasks and creating marketing solutions.
Today I cleaned my attic so I could build a small photo studio so I can create better looking marketing pieces in an attempt to get more clients that I can help achieve their health & wellness goals.
I think you see where I’m going with this.
Perhaps one day I’ll get to the point where I don’t need to do any of the other stuff or be able to pay other people to do it for me and I can focus in on doing only what I enjoy. Until then I’ll just keep working.
